While the conventional kelly drive system is largely outdated due to the efficiency and safety benefits of modern top drive systems, kelly valves themselves are not.

The valves—also called drill string safety valves (DSSVs) or kelly cocks—are still critical and required safety devices in drilling operations on both traditional kelly rigs and modern top drive rigs.

The continuing relevance of kelly valves

Despite the shift away from the kelly drive, kelly valves are still essential safety components for several reasons:

  • For well control: Kelly valves provide a fail-safe measure to shut off the flow of drilling fluid and prevent a high-pressure kick or a blowout from occurring up the drill string.

  • On top drive systems: Top drive rigs require upper and lower safety valves, which are functionally identical to the older "kelly valves" and are still commonly referred to by that name.

  • For rigs without top drives: Many conventional rigs still operate with kelly drive systems, so kelly valves are indispensable for their continued operation.

  • For ongoing improvements: The design of these valves has evolved over the years, with manufacturers continually improving them for better safety and reliability.
